Mahasattwa: The Selfless Journey to Enlightenment

“Mahasattwa,” a captivating cultural drama directed by Chandra Man Munikar, who also conceived its concept and story, is currently being staged at Kausi Theatre in Teku, Kathmandu.

The drama is inspired by the story of Namo Buddha’s establishment and the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha. It centers around Mahasattwa, the youngest prince of King Maharatha and Queen Satyabati from the ancient Panchal Kingdom (now Panauti). The narrative follows Mahasattwa and his two brothers as they venture into the forest to collect rare flowers for a Maha Puja to be held in the kingdom. While there, they encounter a starving female tiger, unable to feed her cubs due to weakness.

In an act of profound selflessness, Prince Mahasattwa sacrifices his own life to nourish the tiger, leading to his death. His altruistic act paves the way for his rebirth as Shakyamuni Buddha. The place where he gave his life, now known as Namo Buddha, serves as the central theme of the play.

Through its poignant narrative, the play explores the idea that individuals can transcend the cycle of suffering caused by the pursuit of fleeting pleasures and instead follow the path of enlightenment, as exemplified by Mahasattwa’s sacrifice.

The performance, dramatized by Ingi Hopo Koinch Sunuwar, features a talented cast, including Sudan Man Munikar, Sangita Thapa Magar, Yuvahang Rai, Smriti Shrestha, Bishal Pulami, Khushi Sunuwar, Sachin Lama, Sumitra Pehim, Kiran Chapagain, Poonam Laxmi Magar, and Prem Chand Pandey.

“Mahasattwa” is staged daily at 5:15 PM, with an additional matinee show on Saturdays at 1:00 PM. Presented by Baraj Kala Kunja, the cultural drama has been running since January 9 and will continue until January 18.
